#restaurantproblems

*if curse words offend you, don't read this post

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know I work in the restaurant industry, if you are new around here ... now you know.   I have done just about every job imaginable except bar-tending.  I currently host, run food and work in the kitchen.  I have, at previous restaurants, waited tables and made desserts.

This is one of those jobs that everyone thinks is a piece of cake.  I am here to tell you, the correct answer is NO, it is not.

You have assholes who send everything back, people who think you are an uneducated moron, bitches who wont get off their phones, rude people who can't even say hello back to you when they walk in the door, and cheap asses who get excellent service and tip 5% ... sure, I'd love to pay for your meal!

So, over time I am going to share some facts, stories, unbelievable things that happen and recommendations for those who frequent restaurants.

Today I am going to share about hosting.  Please, don't be THAT person when you go to restaurants!

... seriously, cry about it.  My back hurts too and I have to stand here and listen to whiny people like you all day.  Stay home if your back is that bad.

Biggest pet peeve ever!!  If you are going to a restaurant know how many freakin' people are coming.  I strain my back trying to move tables around and get really pissed when I find out that it wasn't necessary.  Not to mention you just completely effed up our rotation and wasted our time.

Or "Hi, How are you today"?  "Booth".   I'm sorry, what?  You're doing booth today, how interesting.   Don't be so freakin rude.  It is not that hard to say, "I am well, how are you"?  Then ask for a booth if it is that damn important.

We are taking you to a certain section for a reason.  Sit where we tell you, or go home.  That section is likely closed because the server was cut.  And nobody wants to have to re-clean the section because you are an ass and can't wait 5 seconds for us to clean a table in an open section.

OH MY GOD, if you can not control your kids ... 1. learn to be a better parent because you obviously suck and 2. don't take them out to restaurants where other people are trying to enjoy a meal.  I will not be discreet about the fact that I want to throw your kids into the middle of the street.  And if your kids run into me while I am running food, I will flip out on you and your child ... and everyone else will thank me.

I can not stress this enough!  If you order it, drink it!!! At my restaurant, the host are also bussers.   If you don't even take a sip out of your cup, it makes it really hard to bus and I end up with your drink running down my arm because I am trying to carry a bunch of overfilled cups along with other things.   It is not pleasant.  Some of us don't have the luxury of carrying a bin around with us, we carry everything back in our arms.

Yes, this happens way more than I like to admit.   I have people who will go seat themselves in the bar (which is NOT self seating) and sit at a dirty table, then yell at me because it is dirty.  Excuse me, your the asswipe who decided they could sit wherever and you're the dumbass who picked the only dirty table.  Don't get mad when I am rude right back to you.  Also, I will take my sweet time cleaning your table.  ....Damn where did I leave that sanitizer and towel.

Some advice:

1. Don't get pissy when there is a 20 minute wait and the table that happened to leave is a table, not a booth.  I would be happy to put your name at the end of the list.  Don't tempt me.

2.  If you have a party larger than 10, CALL AHEAD!  It is freaking rude not to.  Especially on a weekend when we are already slammed.  We have to rearrange tables and screw up sections to accommodate you.  It would be nice to be able to figure it out before hand rather than when you are standing there staring at us like we need to work some sort of miracle and clear some space for your dumb ass.  Also, if you don't call ahead, be prepared to wait.  Complaining to me about your wait will only make it longer!  I can really take my time cleaning those tables.

3.  Don't let your kids act like brats.  Be a parent.  My coworker once had table with a child who was drawing on our newly redone tables.  The Grandmother said, "shouldn't you not let her do that" and the Mother said, "oh, it will come out".  So of course, my coworker takes the spray bottle and some towels over, puts them on the table and told the lady she could clean her kids mess.   She found out real quick that the crayon does not come out of the table.  I also had a kid that was drawing on our window shades.  It has been weeks and it is still there.  Would you let your kids do that at home?  Treat our restaurant with respect; at least act like you weren't raised in a barn.

4.  If you are too fat to fit in a booth, don't look at me like I am the one with a problem.  Our booths are made for average and slightly above average sized people.  If you can't fit in the booth maybe you should reevaluate your life.  Spend that "going out to eat" money on a gym membership, eat a few veggies now and then, and don't order two apps, a full rack of ribs, and a dessert after being denied a booth because you're too fat.   Meanwhile, sit at a table and don't whine because I don't have a booth big enough for you, I am not the reason you are fat.

5.  DO NOT bitch at me because you brought your small child who requires a high chair and you can't get a booth.  It is against fire code in MD to have high chairs on the ends of booths.  Bitching at me wont help your case and talking to my manager is not going to solve your problems either.  It's the law, and no matter how special you think you are, you are not above it and I am not about to let you think that you are.  Thanks.

6.  DO NOT stand over my shoulder while I am working on the chart.  You'll see where you are getting seated soon enough.  It's not like you can read it anyway so back up before I accidentally poke you in the face with my wax pen.

7.  DO NOT EVER DEMAND A TABLE.  If you come in look around, point to a table and say I'll take that table, I will all but tell you to F**k Off.  I have a job for a reason, you will go to the table that I seat you at.  If you don't like it, go somewhere else!!! I probably just saved the server from a nightmare anyways.

 8.  If there are open tables but I am not seating anyone, there is a reason.  Do not get shitty with me because I will feed it right back to you.  I am not on a wait because I want to be.  We may be short staffed, the kitchen may be close to crashing or our manager told us to go on a wait, so that is what we are doing.  You don't need to know everything.  Just sit down, shut up and wait for a table.  All parties involved will be happier that way.  Also, asking me every five minutes if you are next is wasting my time and pissing me off.  You will know when your table is ready because I will call your name.  Until then, learn some patience.

9.  Do not compare yourself to me.  I have had people come in and tell me I look tired and then be like, oh well you should try doing "insert here", then you'll really be tired.   Um, excuse me??  I happen to work from three hours before we open to a half hour after we close (that is a 16 hour shift) all weekend and go to school full time.  Don't even act like you know my life or like you are better than me.

I think I have ranted enough for today.   I hope none of my readers are THAT person, but if you know anyone who is, feel free to show them this post.   Make everyone's life easier and be polite and courteous and use your brain.

Rawhide, Arizona 2008

During my first trip to Arizona in 2008, Alex's family took me and Kristin to an old west town called Rawhide.  I loved this place and would love to go back.

We walked around for a little while just to see what there was and get a feel for the place.  We went into some of the stores which were all western themed.

Then, we decided to do a Stagecoach ride.  Best decision ever!
The ride was about 20 minutes long and we went right around sunset which made for some pretty great photos and some awesome views.

After that, we got sent to jail - our parents always said it would happen.  The jailer made us do some pretty ridiculous things in order to get out of jail.

After they released us from jail we headed to dinner at the restaurant on the property before heading back home.

The restaurant, Rawhide Steakhouse, was really good and I highly recommend eating there if you are ever at Rawhide.  They had a live band, great food and a great atmosphere.  Also, they have a wall of photos of famous people who have eaten there including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Josh Turner, Aaron Tippin, and Charlie Daniels.

If you are ever in the Phoenix area, I highly recommend a stop in at rawhide.  It was such a great little town and so much fun!

Bucket List: Eat Spaghetti in Italy

This was on the top of my bucket list before I went to Italy.  I checked this off of my list on our second day in Rome.  We had Spaghetti in for lunch at a restaurant that was actually in a basement.  It was an adorable restaurant and the Spaghetti was so good!

This is the only picture I could find from the restaurant but it was cute!

Spaghetti <3 Yumm

I am really, really picky about my spaghetti sauce, and this stuff was amazing! I really wish I had written down the names of the restaurants that we ate at because I would love to return to this one!

Book Club Friday: Ape House

Ape House
By: Sara Gruen
Pages:
Date Read: (5/10/2012)

"Sam, Bonzi, Lola, Mbongo, Jelani, and Makena are no ordinary apes. These bonobos, like others of their species, are capable of reason and carrying on deep relationships—but unlike most bonobos, they also know American Sign Language.

Isabel Duncan, a scientist at the Great Ape Language Lab, doesn’t understand people, but animals she gets—especially the bonobos. Isabel feels more comfortable in their world than she’s ever felt among humans . . . until she meets John Thigpen, a very married reporter who braves the ever-present animal rights protesters outside the lab to see what’s really going on inside.

When an explosion rocks the lab, severely injuring Isabel and “liberating” the apes, John’s human interest piece turns into the story of a lifetime, one he’ll risk his career and his marriage to follow. Then a reality TV show featuring the missing apes debuts under mysterious circumstances, and it immediately becomes the biggest—and unlikeliest—phenomenon in the history of modern media. Millions of fans are glued to their screens watching the apes order greasy take-out, have generous amounts of sex, and sign for Isabel to come get them. Now, to save her family of apes from this parody of human life, Isabel must connect with her own kind, including John, a green-haired vegan, and a retired porn star with her own agenda."

To be honest, I only picked up this book for two reasons; first, I liked Water for Elephants and figured this would be good because it is by the same author.  Second, I studied biological anthropology in college, so I know a good deal about bonobos and thought this might be an interesting read.  Eh, not so much.

I really didn't enjoy this book very much.  The plot was not very interesting and some of the events seemed way far-fetched and over the top.  Also, there were far to many coincidences which made it too unrealistic.   The character development is pretty weak and I was not drawn to any of them excepts for the bonobos.   The bonobos were really the only thing that kept me reading this book until the end because there is some scientific basis to her writing about them.  I can't say I would recommend this book to too many people.  If you have time to kill or are really interested in bonobos, then maybe, but otherwise, it is not worth it.

I gave this book a 3/5 on GoodReads

1 Year Engagement Anniversary: Our Story

Well, I was going to put this post up on our actual anniversary, but I didn't have it finished.   So, I am posting it today on our three year dating anniversary :)  Our one year engagement anniversary was on Tuesday.

We are having a long(er) engagement for various reasons but so far that has seemed to be the right decision for us.   We have been able to take our time with planning and not stress out and I have been able to find a balance between school and planning.

Back when we first go engaged, I told the story on this blog, but I was kind of rushing through it and didn't really tell the whole story, nor did I tell it well.  So, today I am going to retell our story.

Josh and I got engaged on August 20th, 2012, just two days short of our 2 year dating anniversary.  However, this story actually starts a few days before hand.

Josh bought the ring on August 10 (it is on my warranty papers) and on August 12th his car got a flat tire.  It wouldn't be that big of a deal except that the stupid dealer we got it from never took the tire lock off, nor did they give him the key to it.  Since it was Sunday, the dealer was not open.  Not only could Josh not get to work that day but it made him late on Monday.

Also, he was really stressed out about having to pay for the tire.  This made me furious!  Of course I didn't know that he had just bought me a ring, so I was freaking out thinking he had nothing saved for this vacation we were going on.  I even called my Mom, completely furious (later she said she was trying so hard not to laugh or spit something out; she knew he just bought the ring).   Yes, I felt horrible after I figured it all out and apologized profusely

Then, to throw me off, he played a little trick on me.  He said that he owed money for something and that he was going to pay it off before we left (I cant even remember what it was).  We stopped by my Mom's house before leaving because we forgot to cut our luggage tags and while we were on her street pulling up to her house he faked getting a phone call confirming said payments.  So, I was definitely not expecting a proposal.

The first time he tried to propose was on the night of the fancy dinner.  However, this was the only night when the ship was kind of rocky, and since I get motion sick, I wasn't feeling too great by the end of the evening and just wanted to take medicine and go to sleep.   He originally wanted to take me out on the deck and do it there but it was starting to rain so I said I just wanted to go to sleep ... oops!

The next day was our first day on an island.  We got to Half Moon Cay in the morning and got off our ship for our first excursion, horseback riding on the beach.   I was very excited about this, so excited that I didn't even notice that Josh was completely nervous, that or he hid it really well!  I later learned that he hid the ring in his shoe while we did the excursion!  And that he was freaked out because he had to take his shoes off to get into the water on the horses and didn't want anyone to see it and steal it.

After horseback riding, we had some time before we had to meet with our group to go kayaking.  While waiting, we just decided to pick a spot and chill on the beach.  At this point Josh was completely freaking out because he wanted to do it on the beach, but I was being obnoxious and not picking a spot.  He eventually grabbed two chairs and said, THIS is where we are sitting! In my head I was thinking, Ok someone is a mister grumpy gills today, but I didn't say anything, I just put my stuff down, went to the water and enjoyed.  When I got out of the water and went up to him, he started saying things about enjoying our vacation and how he wanted to do it every year for the rest of our lives and some other things which are private, then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him :)

Unfortunately, because he didn't have a specific plan and was just waiting for the right moment, we don't have any pictures of the actual proposal, but some people were nice enough to take pictures right afterwards for us!

Looking back now, I laugh because I think of what a great job he did of throwing me off and what a great job I did at torturing the poor man.  He said there were so many times when he wanted to do it but I was pulling  him in 30 different directions!  He said when we got to the beach he was determined to do it because it was such a beautiful beach.  I am so glad he did!

I couldn't have asked for a better proposal or a better ring!  He did a great job and I can not wait til May when I can finally call him my husband :)
